Eugene Debs
Eugene Debs
from $27.00
Eugene Debs (1855-1926) was a union activist, founder of the American Socialist Party, and four-time presidential candidate. His speeches drew massive crowds across the country. In 1918, under the terms of the Espionage Act, he was arrested for speaking out against the draft and U.S. involvement in World War I. He represented himself at the trial, and his fiery closing argument ended with the words on this shirt: “While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.” Half the profits from the sale of this shirt will be donated to the Democratic Socialists of America.
